GGRRRRrrrrrrr.....
Once upon a time I read a book called "death: the high cost of living". I liked it. It made me think. Jump ahead 10 years....
I borrow preludes and nocturnes - the first sandman book from a coworker. I WAS AMAZED! Todd Kliens lettering was yet another (and to date the best) argument for a friend of mine who draws comics and wants to letter them with some adobe font (YUCH) Neil gaimans story is great and Sam Keith BLOWS UP THE FUCKING PAGE! panels are broken bend and twisted in ways I've never seen and I'm in love!
Sam Kieth left the project - "I feel like Jimmy Hendrix playing with the beatles"
Well I keep borrowing the books-I follow the story I appreciate many of the other artists until...
Book nine:The Kindly ones.
I'm drooling when the book is handed to me. It's twice the size of the others!
So I start reading it. The art in the prelude is blocky the colors are cartoonish, and the backgrounds look like they came from a stencil.
In the eighth book there was a different artist for each chapter so I didn't worry much but half way through the first real chapter I flip through the book and see that the whole thing is done in the same SHITTY_ASS art that makes the Warner brothers Batman (which I like) look like Salvador Dali.
Fuck.
